The winters were equally as exciting. We enjoyed skating on frozen ponds such as Culham’s Pond or at Lester’s Arena, an enclosed ‘rink’ with its natural ice surface drawn from the adjacent Etobicoke Creek. Lester’s was located on the northern boundary of Toronto Township, on the First Line, just south of Brampton. The arena was located where the 16th hole of the Brampton Golf and Country Club is now situated.
Mississauga is rich with history. Hopefully, I have been able to touch on a few stories and events in Fading History that otherwise might never have been told. As with my other books, I have wanted to bring to those who are interested in our rich past, a slightly different approach. They are a ‘living history’ in that many of my readers have lived through the times I have written about here.
Lester’s Arena was built using the main frame of an airplane hanger from CFB Trenton. Much of a barn was incorporated into the structure. The Etobicoke Creek provided the water for the ice. The Lester farmhouse was located at the top of the hill. Photo courtesy of the Lester Family.
