The Mississauga Hockey League established its Hall of Fame in 1965. On April 4, 1975, ten years later, The Mississauga News held a Sports Celebrities Dinner and Awards Night and established a Sports Hall of Fame for the newly constituted City of Mississauga.
By 1983, the Mississauga Sports Council, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and development of sport within the city of Mississauga, became the custodian of the Mississauga Sports Hall of Fame.
Over the years, many of the inductees to both Halls of Fame played a big part in the development of Dixie Arena and the Dixie Beehive hockey teams.
Some of the people listed below were not involved with Dixie Arena. However, in this chapter, we remember all those dedicated people who played such an important role in the sport of hockey in Mississauga.
As author of this book, I find it particularly interesting that I have vivid memories of the days when, as a reporter with The Mississauga News, I was involved in the organization of the first Mississauga Sports Celebrities Dinner and Awards night. I also worked on the second installment of the event in 1976. My job was to arrange to have the great Maurice ‘Rocket’ Richard as one of the guest speakers.
Many years later, in 1983, I had the pleasure and honour of sitting as an elected member of Council when the City of Mississauga unanimously passed the By-Law establishing the Mississauga Sports Council.
The following is a list of those involved in the sport of hockey and the year they were inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame.
For a complete view of the biographies for all those inducted from all sports, there are reader boards on display at the City Hall available for public viewing.
The Mississauga Sports Hall of Fame offices are located in Suite 1055, (First Floor) Mississauga Civic Centre.
